From shortest to longest
Comparing two objects is a good start, but what do you do with three? That is where ordering comes in. Ordering means arranging objects along one line from the shortest to the longest, so that every neighbor on the line is the next size up. It is the same skill that puts toys on a shelf by height, lines up students for a class picture, or sorts crayons from stubby to new.
There is a simple strategy for ordering three objects, and it is worth teaching slowly. First, find the shortest โ the one that stops earliest when the ends are lined up. Then find the longest โ the one that reaches furthest. Whatever is left over is the middle, and it slots neatly between the other two. The ladder on this page gives each object a home: the shortest climbs to the first step, the middle to the second step, and the longest to the third step.
Why does ordering matter so much in first grade? Because it is the beginning of measurement language that children will use forever: shortest, shorter, middle, longer, longest.
