Line them up, then compare
How can you tell which of two sticks is longer? The trick is not to stare at them from across the room — it is to line them up first. When both objects start at exactly the same left edge, the comparison becomes a race: whichever one reaches further to the right is longer. That is why every object on this page sits on the same rail with its left end glued to the same spot. The rail is doing the measuring for you.
Children often guess by the size of an object's bulk or the height of its pile, and they are sometimes wrong. A long, skinny pencil is longer than a fat, stubby crayon, but the crayon can look "bigger" because it is thicker. Lining up the ends forces the eye to compare length and only length. It is the same reason real measurers use a ruler: the zero mark anchors both objects to one starting point.
The words matter too. Longer means reaching further along the rail; shorter means stopping sooner; the same length means the two ends line up exactly. Every comparison sentence should name both objects: "The pencil is longer than the crayon" and "The crayon is shorter than the pencil" are two ways of saying the same fact, and hearing both builds flexible language.

Comparing by lining up is the first step of using a ruler (put the zero at the end, read where the object stops), of understanding units (how many paperclips fit along the pencil?), and of reasoning about area and volume. A child who lines things up carefully is already thinking like a measurer.
