The Speed Formula

The basic equation to find speed is: Speed = Distance / Time.

When solving this equation, you must ensure that time is in a single unit. If you have a travel duration in hours and minutes, you must convert the minutes to decimal hours first (for example, 1 hour and 30 minutes equals 1.5 hours) before dividing.

If you want to convert speed from kilometers per hour to miles per hour manually, multiply the speed value by 0.621371. To convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour, multiply by 1.60934. Converting to meters per second requires dividing the kilometer per hour value by 3.6.
