What Is a Ray?

A ray is a straight path with one endpoint that continues forever in one direction. The endpoint is the starting place. The arrow at the other side shows that the path keeps going. A ray is halfway between the ideas of a segment and a line: it has one definite beginning, but it has no final endpoint.

The parts that give a ray its name

The order of the letters in a ray's name matters. In ray AB, A is the endpoint and B tells us which direction the ray travels. If you write ray BA, B becomes the endpoint and the direction changes. The two rays may share part of their drawing, but they are not automatically the same ray.

Think about a flashlight beam. The flashlight is the starting place, and the beam travels outward in one direction. A mathematical ray is not really made of light, but the comparison helps you remember the one-way idea. The endpoint stays fixed while the path continues beyond the visible part of the diagram.

Rays are especially important when studying angles. Each side of an angle is a ray that starts at the vertex and extends outward. If you misread the endpoint, you may name the angle backward or measure the wrong opening. Careful ray reading makes later angle work much less confusing.

A ray can point up, down, left, right, or in any slanted direction. Its direction does not need to match the page. Look for the closed endpoint first, then follow the straight path toward the arrow. That simple habit will help you tell a ray apart from a segment and a line.

  • Do not draw closed dots at both ends and still call the figure a ray.
  • Do not place the arrowhead behind the endpoint instead of on the extending side.
  • Do not reverse the ray name without checking which point is supposed to be the endpoint.

Example 1: Read ray AB in the correct direction

The first letter identifies the closed starting point, while the second letter tells you which way the ray travels.

  • Find A at the closed end.
  • Follow the path through B.
  • Look for the arrow beyond B.

Example 2: Why ray BA is different

Reversing the letters changes the starting point even when part of the picture overlaps.

  • Locate B as a possible endpoint.
  • Trace the path from B through A.
  • Compare its direction with ray AB.

The two names describe different rays unless their endpoints and directions agree.
