Every graph starts with a question
Statistics sounds like a grown-up word, but it starts with something every child already loves: asking questions. "What is your favorite snack?" "Which animal would you want as a pet?" "Which book should we read?" When you ask a group of people the same question and write down their answers, you are collecting data. Data is just the fancy word for the answers you collected.
But answers left in a pile are hard to read. If ten classmates each just shout their favorite snack, how do you know which snack won? You need a way to keep track — and the simplest way ever invented is the tally mark. Every time someone answers, you draw one straight line. The clever part is what happens at the fifth answer: instead of drawing a fifth line, you draw a diagonal line across the first four. That bundle of five is quick to read at a glance, and it makes counting much faster than counting single lines.
Why bundle in fives? Because five is a friendly number — it is half of ten, and ten is the number our whole counting system is built on. When tallies are bundled into fives, counting becomes skip counting: five, ten, fifteen, twenty. A child who can count by fives can read a whole tally chart in seconds. Look at a bundle of four lines and a diagonal: that is five, no recounting needed.
This tiny habit carries a big idea: we organize data to make it easier to read. Tally marks, picture graphs, bar graphs, and charts are all tools for the same job — turning a messy pile of answers into a picture anyone can understand. First graders who make tallies are doing real statistics, the same statistics that powers news charts, sports scores, and weather maps.
