Why stories hide numbers
Every story is a number sentence in disguise
Long before algebra class, children meet the same idea hiding inside everyday tales. "There were five birds on a branch, and three more landed." "Maya picked four red apples and some green apples." These are not just stories โ they are number sentences wearing costumes. When we pull the costume off, "Maya picked four red apples and some green apples, nine apples in all" becomes 4 + ? = 9. The question mark is the missing number, and finding it is the whole game.
Teachers call this picture a part-whole diagram. The big circle is the whole โ everything we have in all. The two smaller circles are the parts โ the pieces that come together to make the whole. In our first story, nine apples is the whole. Four red apples is one part. The green apples are the other part, and we do not know how many there are yet, so that circle shows a question mark.
The secret of every part-whole problem is the same: if you know the whole and you know one part, the other part is the difference between them. You can find it by counting on from the part you know until you reach the whole. Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine โ that is five jumps, so the missing part is five. The equation 4 + 5 = 9 then writes the whole story in one tidy line.
Why does this matter so early? Because subtraction and addition are two sides of the same coin. A child who solves 9 โ 4 = ? and a child who solves 4 + ? = 9 are really doing the same thinking. The part-whole picture makes that connection visible, so children learn one flexible idea instead of two separate tricks. When they meet "missing addend" problems in second grade, they will already know exactly what to do: find the part that is missing from the whole.

How to play
After you press Start activity, a randomized story is already waiting and is read aloud. Read the words carefully and point at the diagram. One circle shows the whole, one circle shows a part we know, and one circle hides the missing part behind a question mark. Every whole stays at 20 or less, and your job is to tap the number chip that belongs in the empty circle.
Start by finding the numbers in the story. "Ben drew six stars, and he wants eleven stars on his card" gives you a part (six) and a whole (eleven). Ask the magic question: how many more stars does Ben need? Count on from six: seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven. That is five jumps, so the missing part is five.
If you get stuck, press Hint. The hint reminds you which number is the whole and which number is the part you already know. A wrong choice plays the wrong-answer sound and lets you try another number. A correct choice plays the success sound, reveals the missing number, and finishes the story as an equation such as 6 + 5 = 11. Choose New story whenever you are ready for different numbers.

Carry the picture into real life
You do not need a screen to practice part-whole thinking. At the dinner table, place six crackers on a plate and say, "We need ten crackers for everyone. How many more should I bring?" Your child is solving 6 + ? = 10 while you are reaching for the box. In the car, say "We have driven four songs and the trip takes nine songs. How many songs are left?" Every one of these little moments builds the same mental model.
Always name the three roles: part, part, whole.
Let your child retell the story back in their own words.
If the total is too big, shrink it โ totals under ten build confidence first.
Celebrate the equation, not just the answer: "So 6 + 5 = 11!"
Remember that the goal is flexibility, not speed. A child who can look at ? + 3 = 8 and say "the missing part is five because five and three make eight" has mastered the heart of this lesson. Speed comes later, and it comes much more easily once the picture is clear.
